Discover remains from the Graveyard of the Atlantic
The treacherous, changing land off North Carolina’s coast that wrecked many ships before modern inventions is known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Along the Outer Banks, you can find the remains of hundreds of sunken ships from war, pirates or weather. The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Hatteras rotates exhibits paying homage to the maritime history of shipwrecks and ghost stories, explores the dangerous waters and recounts tales of heroes that made history along the Outer Banks. Throughout the year, the museum hosts speakers to retell the stories of lost shipwrecks and enliven the history of Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge, the Civil War and the USS Monitor, among other treasures.
